How to Measure an Alcove for Custom Floating Shelves

Custom floating shelves can transform an unused alcove or niche into beautiful, functional storage. Whether you're creating a home library, built-in bookshelves, a coffee bar, pantry shelving, or display shelves, getting the measurements right is one of the most important parts of the project.

The challenge? Most walls aren't perfectly square.

An alcove that measures 48 inches wide at the front may be slightly narrower—or wider—at the back. That's why custom alcove shelves require a little more information than a standard wall-mounted floating shelf.

1. Measure the Width in Multiple Places

Don't take just one measurement.

Measure the inside width of the alcove:

  • Near the front of the opening
  • Near the back wall
  • At multiple heights if you're ordering several shelves

Record each measurement rather than automatically using the smallest one.

Walls can bow, taper, or be slightly out of square, particularly in older homes. These measurements help us understand the shape of your opening before your shelves are built.

2. Measure the Depth

Measure from the back wall of the alcove to the front edge of the opening.

Take this measurement on both the left and right sides.

Your finished shelf does not necessarily need to use the entire depth of the alcove. Depending on the room and intended use, you may prefer the shelf to sit slightly inside the opening.

If you're unsure about the ideal depth, send us a photo of the space and we can help you determine what will look best.

3. Determine How Many Shelves You Need

Think about how you plan to use the space.

For example, alcove shelves can be designed for:

  • Bookshelves and home libraries
  • Living room built-ins
    • Kitchen niches
    • Pantries
    • Coffee and beverage bars
    • Home offices
    • Bathrooms
    • Reading nooks
    • Decorative displays

    If you're ordering multiple shelves, measure the opening at approximately each shelf location. The width can change as you move up the wall.

    4. Check Whether Your Walls Are Out of Square

    This is especially important with wall-to-wall floating shelves.

    Small variations that aren't noticeable on an empty wall can become much more apparent once a precisely built wood shelf is installed between two walls

    Don't worry if your measurements aren't identical.

    That's exactly why we ask for measurements in multiple locations.

    For highly customized projects, we'll review your measurements with you before the shelves are built and determine whether any additional measurements are needed.

    5. Take Photos of the Entire Alcove

    Photos are extremely helpful.

    Take at least one photo straight toward the opening that shows the entire niche or alcove.

    If possible, also take photos from the left and right sides.

    These allow us to see details that measurements alone can't communicate, including

    trim, outlets, wall conditions, surrounding cabinetry, and other potential installation considerations.

    6. Consider Lighting Before the Shelves Are Built

    If you're interested in LED floating shelves, tell us during the design process.

    Integrated LED lighting can be incorporated into custom floating shelves to create beautiful task or accent lighting for bookshelves, bars, kitchens, living rooms, and display niches.

    Planning for lighting before construction allows us to account for the LED channel, wiring, driver requirements, and how the shelves will interact with the electrical setup in your space.
